New Photo Gadget!

Simple ideas are the best ideas, I always say. This is the XSHOTPIX, a monopod with a twist:

baton01

The XSHOTPIX is a long, collapsible baton with a tripod fixture on the end. Why is this awesome? Because lots of people go on vacations and want to take pictures of themselves, or their loved ones and themselves, and they don't always have a friendly non-camera-stealing fellow tourist to hold the camera for them.

Lots of people take pictures while holding their camera at arms length. Sure, that works. Or they wedge their camera in a tree or on the roof of their car, using a bunch of magazines to balance it precariously. This light-weight baton, however, produces a better picture with less effort. In the above picture, the baton is only about 3/4s extended. It's friggin' long, as illustrated here and here:

In this picture, Michael is holding the camera with his right hand:

baton02

The tripod fixture at the end is pose-able, allowing you to lock it at any angle.

Okay, so what? Well, if we were on top of a mountain and we wanted the scenery in the background along with ourselves, imagine how handy this baton would be! I could look goofy, get the mountain in the background, and have a much more satisfying picture.

Most of us have, at one time or another, grabbed a camera, spun around while holding the camera pointing at ourselves, and pressed the shutter release.

What?

You've never done this?

It produces pictures like this:

baton04

See? Tons of fun! You can do the same thing with a video camera, for wonderful effect. What happens when I put a compact digital camera into movie-mode and put it on the end of the XSHOTPIX baton?

Yeah, total greatness.

BTW, for all you ladies out there, I am MUCH handsomer when I shave. The above images and video do not do my hotness justice. Seriously, I am much totally hotter. Seriously. For example, I totally look studly in this picture:

baton05

But, imagine how much studlier I would have looked if I had been using an XSHOTPIX when taking that picture! All the ladies would be swoonin' and carryin' on. That would be sweet. Clearly, I need to buy one of these things, and so do you. Unfortunately, they are not yet for sale. So, if you want to get a funky photo-gadget for someone, get them a GorillaPod... which might, actually, be more versatile... but can the GorillaPod double as a pretend Lightsaber?! I don't think so!

Carry on,
-douglas

Eh...I dunno about the "shaving vs not shaving" thing. Personally, I like a bit of scruff on a guy. (Notice I said a BIT). ;-)

Awesome camera, though!

Mr. Popeil:

Now that you have gotten me hooked on this fantastic product, where can it be purchased?

No where!
It hasn't been released yet!

I borrowed Michael's. Michael got one because he does a photography podcast and he gets all kinds of photography products early.

There is a cheaper, shorter, plastic version on the market, but it is not nearly as cool.

If you really are interested, I'd just keep an eye on the xshotpix.com web site, and they'll probably post ordering info next month.

You know, if you put the batton on a spring and attached it to a belt of some sort, you would probably get the same affect as the 3rd person view used in "Pi" or "Requiem For A Dream" as long as the camera had auto-focus. You know where the subject is centered but the camera bounces around a bit. Very cool.

for a not so useful gadget that's really inexpensive, I suggest the ultra pod http://www.pedcopods.com/products.htm

eddie bauer was selling them for 9 dollars around Christmas and it's vastly improved my pictures (Which are always shaky because, well, I am.) it also has a cool velcro strap for attaching it to random things to take pictures.

Yah, I got something similar from Amazon one year for a similar price.

I have kept it in my car, thinking I may need a mini-tripod at any time,

but have never, ever used it for it's intended purpose... that I can remember.

mine's only 5 inches long so I tend to keep in my little green timbuk2 metro bag, with my camera. I've used it a fair amount actually.

I'm more likely to forget to take pictures :)

You crack me up. But you've forgotten one thing: your hotness is only augmented by the XSHOTPIX in the finished photos--the chicks will *not* come callin' while you're actually using such a geektastic contraption.

Dad has one of those gorilla things. While on vacation it inspired him to make a stop-motion animated film in his hotel room of the gorillapod walking around the table and drinking his coffee.

Ok Douglas, over a YEAR later and thanks to you I still want this toy. I have a GorillaPod, but it didn't appease my appetite. I'm buying it! :) Very soon it will travel to Italy with me...

Signed,

A fellow geek.
