Google Chrome
Google launches a new product today: Google Chrome.

What's a good way to launch a sexy new Google product for the nerds?

Get Scott McCloud to write a comic book about it, explaining the development process, programming architecture, and new features. Of course!

This is required reading for any nerd. 38 pages of fun.

UPDATE: Available for download now. Bah. I like the comic book better. :-)

You forgot to mention the release is Windows Only. Really pissing off some of my Mac friends. :)

Also, I have seen this concept before. It was the basis of the original Java Client which no one adopted because it required too much scripting away from the standards to get objects to work. Maybe we are more sophisticated users and developers now than we were in 1996. But the multi-threading, build a browser for what you are doing now is not new at all. Java failed and ended up producing the widgets we have now. Google may succeed but I hate the idea of developing for a 3rd platform.

Wow, Windows-only? Really?

That surprises me. Almost a first for Google.

Ah well. Windows NEEDS all those security features and memory-protection features more than Macs, after all. *grin*

Oh, also-- Mac and Linux clients are on the way.

I'm not too worried. Google has zillions of dollars and is going to try a zillion things. Android looks like it is going to take a while to be meaningful, despite oodles of press coverage. This browser may amount to nothing, but some of it's ideas and development will leak into the rest of the Web-dev world. It's all good.

Some hopeful part of me feels we might be moving AWAY from "Standards Babylon."

It makes perfect sense that it's Windows only at this point. Why delay the whole thing because of the significant amount of development time for Mac/Linux? Nope get up and running first with the largest population.

Any idea when we can download it?

According to Wikipedia, later today. Current indexed links to the download are redirecting back to the home page.

Yup, there is an earlier press release which says it WILL be downloadable today.

I'll update my post with a link when it appears.

My dream is that operating systems become sensible enough that cross-platform development takes no more time than single-platform development. With programming architectures like wxWidgets and Qt, this may one day be possible.

But I'm not holding my breath. :-)
