Uncloseted News
Uncloseted news, all at once, this week:

  • Clay Aiken (Vocalist) Comes Out (link): "I cannot raise a child to lie or hide things." Answering rumors in 2003: "I don't really feel like I have anybody to answer to but myself and God and the people I love."

  • Linsay Lohan (Miscellaneous Famous Person) Comes Out (link): "[We have been together] a very long time," replied 22-year-old actress Lohan, who has been living with the 30-year-old DJ since May."

  • Ian McKellen (Gandalf/Magneto), who has been out for a while, talks to school kids about tolerance and minorities. (link): "I've been busy at quite a few schools recently. I went to a wonderful co-ed faith school in Harpenden. They were Christians and absolutely determined that their pupils did not discriminate," he said.

"They invited me to come and give prizes to 13-year-olds in front of the parents and to talk, partly, about being gay. I said that we were all part of a minority group - be it for being short or tall or fat or thin, or having red hair or whatever. I said, 'Hands up who thinks they are part of a minority group,' and all the hands went up.

"I had Gandalf's sword with me and I knighted a pair of children 'Sir Minority' and 'Dame Minority' and it went down very well. It is essential to talk to 12- and 13-year-olds because they absorb what's thrown at them, whether it be homophobia or tolerance - and we have to make sure it's positive stuff."

It was the Ian McKellen story that caused me to make this post. What an awesome man.

Speaking of Awesome, George Takei (Sulu, Hiro's Dad) got married to his long-time partner recently. Set phasers on STUNNING! (that's a quote from SNL.) Anyone who hasn't watched the first season of Heroes really should... just ignore the first episode (pilot). The rest is awesome.

I hadn't heard the Ian McKellan story - thanks!

And George Takei is just about the cutest thing ever. *grin* I was *thrilled* when I first recognized him on Heroes... What an adorable photo.

Until Prop 8 passes! Woohoo! Let's vote away rights, it's the Christian thing to do.

Please don't generalize. :) I am against talking anyones freedom or rights away just because of fear or personal ideals. I am for giving the freedom to Americans that so many fought and died to help give us and help us keep. I am also a Christian.

It is more the intolerant hyporcritical thing to do.

yeah, but I'll just point out, 100% of the groups opposed to prop 8 (or any similar measure) are religious groups.

There are no secular groups advocating such baloney. It's always a subgroup of the religious.

I have several athiests telling me that my right to pray to God should just be behind closed doors. I should not be able to go to work and pray at my desk or even over my food in the lunchroom and my children should not be able to make a group at school so they can get together and talk about God openly as well as pray when they want to.

Don't tell me that religious groups are the only ones wanting to take rights away. My next door neighbors, Athiests, who have a son that works for the public school system, constantly tell me I am in the wrong for my beliefs.

It take all kinds.

Telling you you're wrong is not the same thing as taking away your rights. It's never persecution to be told you're factually mistaken.

You are really misinformed. Atheists generally think people should be free to pray wherever they want- as long as there's no coercion. After-school Christian clubs are fine.

Doesn't change the fact that there are just as many tolerant, accepting, loving Christians as there are hateful, bigoted, jackass-ish ones. Doesn't make generalizations any more fair or correct or right.

Not trying to lay into you, but it's a statement I see a lot, and it bugs the hell out of me.

So? That doesn't mean everyone who is religious is against gay rights. Many of the gay people I know are Christian and they're certainly not against gay rights. There are SOOOO many different sects of Christianity that it's ridiculous to try to put them all in the same category and it's ignorant to say that it's somehow the Christian way to deny people their civil rights.

I love that not only is Ian McKellan making speechesand talks about tolerance, but he was invited by a private Christian school to do one. That kind of tolerance needs to be taught.

Awesome post.

I think Lindsay and her DJ have been in each other's lives lots longer than since the time their address became the same.

McKellen = some kind of wonderful. When I was in Amsterdam last week it was not just heartening that there were a myriad of rainbow umbrellas and handholdings and even paired-bicycle-chainings-to-railings going on --- it also was that nobody paid any special attention at all [other than the lovers themselves, of course.]

Exactly: positive images of tolerance and rainbow spectrum variety. As CLV says up there, it needs to be taught --- and everywhre, too, not just where there are canals.

- Kudos to Clay for the example he sets for his child.

- Who the hell cares who or what Lindsay Lohan is doing? But maybe now she'll get some peace from the paparazzi?

- Gandalf rocks my world!

- I was literally jumping for joy when I heard about George Takei getting married.
