Free
The best things in life are free.

...which is good, because the economy is terrifying.

I blame Rosh Hashana.

And circus peanuts.

And that dork Edward Cullen. I'm sure it's his fault.

Today was the worst 1-day drop in the markets in the past 21 years. Douglas's stock portfolio dropped about 10%. Also, I didn't win the lottery.

But the best things in life are free.

hugs,
D

I'm scared to look at my funds. Well, they pulled out after 9/11 at which point they were worth something like 1/4 less than what I paid for them. More or less. Amnesia can be a good thing.

Remember, the best things in life are free.

Man, do you understand what's going on here? Cuz as far as I can tell the rich snots on the playground have just swaggered up to me and my hand-me-down Barbie knock-off who's missing all her hair to tell me that they lost a bet and that if I don't give them my lunch money I'll never eat again.

That's... about the most wonderful analogy I've ever read. Yeah, I think that might be about right...

The best things in life aren't things.

Saw that on a bumper sticker, but I'm all for fender-based philosophy.

Rosh Hashanah is one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar. Basically, no one is suppose to do any work and you spend most of the day in the synagogue. It's kind of like blaming Ramadan, doesn't make any sense.

And circus peanuts do?

(I suggest that making sense was not my goal.)

Eating too much circus peanuts = too much sugar in bloodstream = erratic behavior. Thus, if all of wall street ate a whole bunch of circus peanuts yesterday they may have contributed to the hyperactive market plunge. And circus peanuts are funny within themselves.

Every so often, I get a mad craving for circus peanuts. I WANTS THEM.

Then I eat two. TWO. And I'm done. The craving is over. And I have to give the rest of the bag away.

I spent part of my drive to Platsburgh describing how various parts of the economy work - such as the spreading of risk in the reinsurance market...

I kept feeling like there was some part I was missing, but the vanishing value of real estate has made the loans that were made look like giant idiocy... but really, I came in to say...

I think, as Mugsimo has said, the best things in life arn't things you can hold in your hand. They are sunny afternoons with an ice tea. A quiet lake as you glide along. A dance that takes you off the floor, out of time and connects your soul to your partners.

One of my greatest techniques for resisting the siren call of new gadgets: Stop following them. Forget about them. Get busy doing other things.

If I sit around on the internet, reading gadget news, I start to care waaaaay too much.

I put $5K into my IRA last week. I still think it was a good time to buy. I'm not planning to sell for decades.
